Norwich Castle

Brown and Ralph were extremely privileged to carry out the stone and conservation package on this landmark project at Norwich Castle.

The project entailed refurbishment of the Grade I listed Castle Keep: titled the Gateway to Medieval England project.

The size and scale of this exercise to refurbish the medieval castle meant this was no normal project, and it therefore relied upon our extensive knowledge and experience to carry out the works. Our works package involved some of the most crucial and delicate aspects of the entire scheme, including: delicately tunnelling through (and reinforcing with steel) the keep walls to allow new entrances/forming new pockets into the historical flint walls to enable the structural steels to be secured into the building/relocating and re-constructing the boardman stone staircase, and new doorway constructions. All of these works had to be carried out under the watchful eye of archaeologists and engineers.

We carried all of the stonework and builders work in-house using our own masons, including the supply and installation of new matching stone via our trusted supply chain.
