Conservation treatments to the Heraldic crests above Christ’s College Great Gate and Masters Lodge entrances were conducted with a programme over 2 calendar years to allow carbonation of the lime repairs.
The conservation of the decorated stonework carving above the Great Gate will not only increase its natural life but also brighten the Cambridge streetscape.
Following detailed laboratory analysis of the previous layers of paints, and the removal and replacement of poor quality mortar repairs, the second phase of works are due to be completed in the autumn of 2018.
Whilst working access was in position, the opportunity to replace eroded stonework was also taken – guided by a conservation ethos.
